Here is your quick guide to making a personal development plan
1. Define Your Goals
Naturally, the first step to achieving your goals is knowing what they are exactly. Make a list of both short- and long-term goals, no matter how crazy they may seem to you now, and regardless of whether they’re career-, personal growth–, or relationship-oriented.
Don’t set an unrealistic number of goals (or goals that are just unrealistic)—it’s great to be ambitious, but if you have too many things on your list, you’ll feel defeated if you don’t achieve them all.
2. Set Deadlines
Once you’ve set your goals, give yourself a deadline to achieve each one. Short-term goals might only need a final deadline, but break your long-term goals into manageable targets and give yourself multiple deadlines so that at each stage you can evaluate your progress.
If you’re set on achieving twenty different long-term goals, when you start setting your deadlines, keep in mind that you won’t be able to achieve them all at once, and give yourself realistic deadlines for each.

3. Create a Personal SWOT Analysis
A SWOT analysis is a powerful tool used by businesses to help them achieve goals. Like a business, you can’t build a successful life without understanding your own Strengths, Weaknesses, biggest areas of Opportunity, and Threats. Be aware of your strongest qualities, what makes you unique, what you need to work on, and your best opportunities for development.
Threats don’t have to necessarily be competition or another person. They can be anything that’s holding you back from reaching success. Understanding these facets of yourself will allow you to mold your goals around your strengths and weaknesses and optimize your chances of success.
4. Develop New Skills
Next, cross-reference your strengths and weaknesses with the steps you’ve laid out to achieve your goals. Does the path to your goals involve any of your weaknesses? If so, work on building those skills to the point that they’re no longer weaknesses.
A weakness might not necessarily be something you’re bad at. It’s just a missing puzzle piece that you’ve just identified.
5. Take Action
Now that you know your goals and you’ve laid out the steps to achieve them, it’s time to take action! You’ll never feel 100% ready for anything. That’s perfectly normal! Swallow back those butterflies and take the first step. You may surprise yourself! If you’re looking for a place to start, try the Fabulous Shape Your Mind meditation on the Fabulous app.
