How to Keep Happy Employees…Happy

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A lot of factors go into whether a business will succeed or fail. But there is one thing your company can do to help ensure success: keep your employees happy. Happy employees are more productive and less likely to quit. In other words, keeping your employees happy isn’t just good for them, but for your whole business!

But how can you keep your employees happy and satisfied with their work?

Prioritize a Healthy Work-Life Balance

It can be tempting to think that workers are only of good use to a company when they’re on the clock. The reality, however, is that employees are more productive when they have more time to themselves. Shorter work weeks, more paid time off, and the option to work remotely all have a positive influence on employee satisfaction—and, by extension, their productivity.

Put simply, people need down time to recharge their mental and emotional batteries. Idle time allows our creativity to stir and frees up our brains for deeper and more reflective thinking. It also reduces stress levels, which can improve your workers’ health. Embrace relaxation time; it makes happy employees happier and can help your grumpier workers find some peace!

Be Open and Inclusive

No one likes to feel excluded or out of the loop. Trust is one of the top things employees crave with their company. When employees feel like they’re part of the bigger picture, they become more invested in the company’s growth and success. After all, the company’s success is their success, too. Keep your employees updated on where the business is going and consider also giving them a voice on important issues like hierarchical restructuring.

Another way to make sure employees feel included is to encourage connections between workers. Company-wide social events, group dining areas, and team-building exercises are all great ways for workers to mingle, which can lead to a cross-pollination of ideas between departments that might not happen otherwise. Strengthening the ties employees have to each other also strengthens the ties between employees and their company. It serves as a good reminder that everyone is on the same team and that everyone benefits when the company does well.

Set Clear Goals and Recognize Success

A little praise can go a long way. Employees want to feel encouraged and like their work matters. Something as simple as a “job well done” can spark motivation in your employees, encouraging them to work harder. Constructive criticism can be helpful when employees need a little guidance… but people respond much more favorably to praise.

But don’t congratulate blindly. Make sure your recognition is sincere and valuable. Help your employees set goals for themselves. Challenge them to push themselves. Then, when they succeed, celebrate with them! A win for your worker is a win for your whole company.
