What is a Wellness Coach? (and Do I Need One?)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We all need some help from time to time.

Do you need to make significant changes in your life? Would you like to improve your eating habits or incorporate a daily fitness routine, but seem to lack the knowledge or motivation to do so? Do you need better, healthier, ways to deal with stress, but aren’t sure where to begin?

If so, consider working with a wellness coach.

What is a Wellness Coach?

Just like a sports coach pushes athletes to succeed, a wellness coach guides you towards achieving your health and wellness goals.

However, unlike nutritionists or physical therapists, wellness coaches don’t offer specific diet and exercise suggestions; instead, they work with you to create tailored plans that fit your unique lifestyle. It’s a supportive, holistic relationship that focuses on facilitation as opposed to prescription. Wellness coaches are your accountability partners, providing you with support and encouragement. The aim is to make you feel empowered and help you thrive – physically, mentally, and spiritually.

What to Look For in a Wellness Coach

Because you’ll be spending a considerable amount of time with your coach – as well as entrusting her with your goals – it’s important that you both feel comfortable and at ease.

Before you hire a particular coach, conduct a few interviews with potential coaches. Ask them questions about their working styles and references to get a better understanding of their individual personalities.

Keep in mind, though, that wellness coaches are not usually licensed health care professionals. If you feel that your issue may be related to mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety, then you may want to talk with a licensed health professional before considering wellness counseling with a coach.

What to Expect on Your First Session

Once you’ve hired a coach, you’ll both meet for your first session, which could range from fifteen minutes to one hour or longer. This session could take place either in person, over the phone, or online.

During this time, you’ll talk about what you’d like to accomplish, as well as where you are in relation to your aspirations. Together, you’ll outline your goals, as well as highlight any challenges or possible resistance that could hinder your progress.

After your initial meeting, you’ll receive homework assignments. These are activities and tasks to complete or think about in between your coaching sessions, such as journaling or creating action plans.

Your life coach will provide you with support guidance each step of the way, while also keeping you accountable.

A Fabulous Wellness Coach

Perhaps the best thing you can gain from having a wellness coach is the ability to coach yourself. A wellness coach will provide you with the tools to make meaningful changes in your life. But once those habits have been instilled within you, it makes it much easier – and so much more rewarding – to stand on your own.
