This Is How Prioritizing Well-being Can Improve Employee Experience

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is my company doing to improve employee experience? If this isn’t a question you’ve been asking yourself lately, it’s time to start. Employee experience has a direct and measurable effect on productivity and the overall health of the company. In other words, the better your workplace’s employee experience, the more productive (and profitable) the company.

But what is employee experience, exactly? And how does employee well-being tie in? We’ll cover all that and more in today’s blog post.

How do we define employee well-being?

Before we talk about improving employee experience, let’s first clarify the terminology. First: how do we define well-being?

At its most basic, well-being is the health, happiness, and prosperity of an individual or group. General well-being is the sum of several different dimensions of well-being, which we categorize by different areas of life:

  • Physical well-being: Being in good physical health and receiving adequate healthcare
  • Mental/Emotional well-being: Being able to regulate emotions and cope with life’s daily stressors
  • Spiritual well-being: Living a fulfilling and purposeful life aligned with personal values and beliefs
  • Social well-being: Having deep and meaningful relationships with others
  • Occupational well-being: Being productive and satisfied with work
  • Financial well-being: Having the adequate resources to meet current and future needs

Why does employee well-being matter?

Adults in the modern world are spending at least a third of their lives at work. A consequence of that is that the workplace environment, corporate culture, and employee experience all influence employee well-being.

The opposite is equally true. Employees struggling with their well-being will inevitably bring those struggles to work with them. They won’t be able to focus as well as they could. Also, they will engage and contribute less. They might even get sick more often than happier employees.

Employees are the lifeblood of an organization. Keeping them healthy and fulfilled keeps the workplace running at peak efficiency.

How does prioritizing well-being improve employee experience?

Okay, so having healthy and happy employees is good for the company. What does that have to do with employee experience?

Work is an integral part of our lives. Furthermore, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lines between work life and personal life have become the blurriest they’ve ever been.

As a result, the workplace climate and the well-being of its employees are inextricably linked. The relationship between an employee and their workplace is reciprocal, so, improving one improves the other, and vice versa.
